Pasadena Autism Resources

Parents of autistic children face a variety of short and long-term challenges. Finding resources to address these challenges can benefit your child’s health, your health, and your family’s health. Just addressing day-to-day care needs can be overwhelming. Thankfully, recent court rulings and health insurance provider settlements have made more resources available to autistic children and their families.

Critical Resources in Pasadena

One resource considered critical in both short and long-term development for autistic children is early intervention behavioral therapy. The Law Offices of Scott Glovsky brought national attention to this need through our lawsuit against Kaiser Permanente brought on behalf of a young autistic boy, and other autistic children. The lawsuit secured the rights of California, Los Angeles, and Pasadena residents to seek applied behavior analysis (ABA), speech therapy and occupational therapy from Kaiser Permanente.

California laws and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (known as “Obamacare”) require health insurers to provide minimum policy benefits. Minimum benefits include behavioral health treatments. In many cases, this includes applied behavior analysis (ABA), speech therapy and occupational therapy. Experts consider these as critical treatments for autistic children.

We brought a definitive California case that affirmed this principle. The Court explained in our case, Arce v. Kaiser, that the Mental Health Parity Act, codified at section 1374.72 of the Health and Safety Code, provides that

“[e]very health care service plan contract … that provides hospital, medical, or surgical coverage shall provide coverage for the diagnosis and medically necessary treatment of severe mental illnesses of a person of any age … under the same terms and conditions applied to other medical conditions ….”

If Kaiser, Anthem Blue Cross, Health Net, United Healthcare, Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna or any other health insurance company or provider has denied you coverage for these treatments, for a free consultation, call us at (626) 604-6972 or send us an inquiry form by clicking here.

Autism Statistics Supporting Early Behavioral Treatment Intervention

  • As many as 1.5 million Americans live with an autism spectrum disorder
  • 1 in 88 children has been identified with an autism spectrum disorder
  • The cost of autism over the lifespan is 3.2 million dollars per person
  • Cost of lifelong care can be reduced by 2/3 with early diagnosis and intervention

Autism Basics

Autism is one of a group of complex developmental problems called autism spectrum disorders. These disorders appear in early childhood, usually before age 3. The disorders affect a person’s ability to interact and communicate with others. In addition to autism, the other two disorders on the spectrum are Asperger syndrome and pervasive developmental disorder (PDD-NOS).

Asperger syndrome is characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication, along with restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests. PDD-NOS is characterized by severe and pervasive impairment in the development of reciprocal social interaction or verbal and nonverbal communication skills and is often referred to as atypical autism, because the criteria for autistic disorder are not met.

Researchers generally do not believe there is a single cause for autism. It is generally believed that it is caused by abnormalities in brain function and structure. Comparing brain scans between children with autism versus those without, reveals differences in the shape and structure of the brain. Researchers are also investigating a number of theories, including the links among heredity, genetics and medical problems.
