LA Times Coverage of Nava Lawsuit Against Parkwest Rehabilitation Center
By Scott Glovsky on June 10th, 2020 in In The Media, Nursing Home and Elder Abuse, Wrongful Death
The LA Times article “After a nursing home patient died of COVID-19, her daughter fought back” tells another unfortunate COVID-19 wrongful death story. In his column, Steve Lopez features our client Griselda Nava and the story of her mother’s (Florentina Lopez) death. Florentina Lopez lived in Parkwest Rehabilitation Center (“Parkwest”) nursing home in Reseda, CA. She died at the age of 66 from COVID-19. The article says 39 patients and staff at the facility tested positive for COVID-19. And that six people died.
Profits Over People
As our lawsuit explains, this is a case about profits over people. Parkwest took intentional and cruel actions in its response to the COVID-19 outbreak until it was too late. The facility failed to provide personal protective equipment like gloves and masks to its staff members. Parkwest directed staff members who had tested positive but had yet to exhibit symptoms to continue working until symptoms arose. The facility also failed to identify or isolate staff or residents living with or suspected to live with COVID-19. In fact, Parkwest hid knowledge of employees who were exposed to or tested positive to the virus. All while instructing them to interact with other employees and residents as per their assigned job duties.
“Had Parkwest taken appropriate precautions to protect its residents, Griselda’s mother would still be with us,” said attorney Scott Glovsky. “The behavior of Parkwest was completely reckless. Parkwest enabled the virus to spread rapidly and needlessly kill many residents.”
Steve Lopez’s column goes on to explain that approximately 28,000 nursing home residents and employees have died nationally. Furthermore, in California skilled nursing facilities, almost 2,000 residents and over 60 employees have died. The article further explores how California’s actions contribute to the issue.
